03. STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY

Framing

The skeletal system dictates the bounds of your interior volume. Altering load paths without calculating sheer strength and point load distribution is the leading cause of structural sag and eventual failure.

PL

Point Load Transfer

Removing a wall means shifting the distributed weight to a single beam, which then transfers that weight into vertical posts. These point loads must track uninterrupted down through the floor system directly into a concrete footing pad in the foundation. Blocking between joists is required to prevent crushing.

EL

Engineered Lumber

Dimensional lumber (e.g., 2x10, 2x12) is prone to warping and shrinking over long spans. Utilize Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) or Parallel Strand Lumber (PSL) for flush-beam applications. These composite materials offer superior dimensional stability and predictable load capacities.

SB

Steel I-Beams (W-Shapes)

For open concept designs spanning over 20 feet, timber becomes inefficient due to required beam depth. W-Shape steel beams provide massive tensile strength in a compact profile, allowing them to be recessed completely into the ceiling joist cavity for a flush finish.
